Join us in beautiful Lunenburg, Nova Scotia to discover musical & dance traditions amid one of North America's most exquisite 18th century seaside towns. Boxwood presents a full range of classes with world renowned experts in the realms of traditional folk and early music & dance. The flute is center stage along with many other instruments, voices, and the rhythm of dance in concerts, dances, sessions, classes, lectures with gourmet cuisine in the heart of Nova Scotia's beautiful South Shore inspiring the creative spirit of every participant. The Boxwood experience brings together kindred spirits from all over the world creating lasting friendships, nourishing music, and soulful fun in a unique festival and workshop program that is completely non-competetive.

Boxwood has received worldwide recognition for more than a decade producing extraordinary gatherings dedicated to exploring and sharing the oral traditions music making. Boxwood’s invited guest artists change from year to year to include leading players, teachers, makers, and scholars from among many musical traditions. Students attend classes daily and are encouraged to visit with each teacher during the course of the week with the aim of expanding musical vocabulary, learning new techniques, broadening their sense of the instrument, and enabling them to find their own musical voice. The evenings are filled with social gatherings that include excellent meals, concerts, social dancing, informal gatherings and sessions of music-making with students and teachers alike. While the week in Lunenburg emphasizes the flutes, whistles, and recorders and their musical traditions, the festival encourages a multidisciplinary approach, inviting a variety of artists, students and players of all instruments at all levels – novice and experienced.

The week's activities begin with a dinner & concert on Sunday evening July 19, 2009 with proceeds to benefit the Fred Kaspar Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Pricing Structure

Our pricing structure has recently been updated to accommodate changes in exchange rates and reflect our change in catering; see our Participant Info page for more details. Prices for the 2009 festival are in CANADIAN dollars (CAD), and are as follows:

Full Tuition:

Includes classes, public programs, activities, and 7 gourmet suppers.
$625 CAD

Early bird discount if paid before April 15, 2009
$575 CAD

Work study:

Inquire for availability and details. See also the work study page.
$425 CAD

Guest Pass:

Includes admission to public programs, activities, and meals including 7 gourmet suppers. No classes included. The guest pass is reserved for guests and family of Boxwood participants.
$375 CAD

A La Carte:

A La Carte pricing for a day rate is available, but not encouraged as most classes are geared progressively and we strive to create continuity in the classes, at mealtime and in our activities.

Day rate including classes, meals & activities: $125 CAD

Day rate - regular music classes only $100

Drop-in rate for individual dance classes: $20 per class

Single dinner includes salad, entree, sides & dessert - $20

Children's Program

We welcome children ages 5-12 for five fun-filled days exploring music, dance, and crafts! Each day includes these fabulous classes and activities:

  • A morning dance class with Marlys Norman to stretch the limbs and introduce fundamentals of ballet, modern dance, and having fun with movement.
    (Marlys will also be offering an adult class!)
  • A beginner’s pennywhistle class with Rod Garnett, Chris Norman, and Shelley Phillips to learn the basics of this most beautiful, sturdy, and portable of instruments while playing fun tunes.
  • An enchanting afternoon crafts session with Shelley Phillips including instrument making, songs with Eamon O’Leary, and lots of general tom-foolery.
  • Each day will also include play-time, a snack and a lunch break. Participants must bring their own snacks and lunches. All other materials included.

The program is offered July 20 - 24; 9AM - 2PM. Cost: $225 for each child (includes whistle).

Refunds

Registration for Boxwood 2009 is limited and is filled on a first come first serve basis upon full payment of tuition. Places cannot be held with a deposit. No Refunds will be made after June 15, 2009. Refund requests made on or before June 15, 2009 will receive a refund within 30 days of receipt of the full amount paid minus a $50 administrative charge. There are no refunds for work study participants or for the Children's Program after May 1, 2009. Cancellations prior to this time will be subject to the abovementioned $50 administrative charge.
